The Archbishopric of Nidaros ruled over Iceland, Greenland, the Faroes, Shetland, Orkney, the Hebrides, and Man. The church sought order through primogeniture; Sverre, a priest-educated warrior from the Faroes, stood as their unexpected challenger. kneel<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><em>The conflict between emperor and pope over secular power had reached Norway\u2019s coast, where the pope demanded principled supremacy over all worldly rulers as God\u2019s representative on earth. King Sverre, himself priest-educated and well acquainted with theological currents from the University of Bologna that opposed the pope\u2019s power ambitions, stood firm against both excommunication and ecclesiastical pressure. Even when Archbishop \u00d8ystein reconciled with the king, the pope continued his relentless struggle against the Norwegian monarch.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Oslo Bishop Nikolaus Arnesson \u2014 paradoxically approved as bishop by the very same King Sverre he would later fight \u2014 started his rebellion in 1196 with support from King Magnus\u2019s former followers and the country\u2019s most powerful families. The last six years of Sverre\u2019s reign were marked by this bitter struggle between the Birkebeiner and the new episcopal party, the Bagler \u2014 a conflict that would reach its climax on Strindfjordens bloody waves.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-3971a02\" data-id=\"3971a02\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8e2a68 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b8e2a68\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p3\"><em><strong>On June 18th, 1199, Trondheimsfjorden roared with war as Sverre met the Baglers in battle<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><em>The Bagler fleet had sailed north from Bergen to conquer Nidaros, but when they discovered Sverre\u2019s presence in the city, they fled northward to H\u00e5logaland to gather support from Bjark\u00f8y. King Sverre used the late winter to build eight great ships with high sides, ready by Easter for the coming confrontation. When the Bagler fleet returned in early June and anchored at Munkholmen, the Birkebeiner fleet sailed out from the well-fortified city on the morning of June 18th.<\/em><\/p><p class=\"p3\"><em>The battle at Tautra raged for six hours from midday, with King Sverre leading from his ship \u201cHugro\u201d \u2014 a name meaning peace of mind \u2014 using crossbow while delivering inspiring speeches to his men. As Professor Fredrik Paasche noted: \u201cThe king\u2019s leadership bore now, as always, a good part of the honor for the victory.\u201d While Bishop Nikolaus strategically kept to the periphery and finally fled with his allies, Sverre and his warriors could row back to the city after clearing six of the Baglers&#8217; ships, with Hallvard of Saastad among the fallen. The bishop\u2019s mocking claim that \u201cSverre the priest\u201d only controlled \u201ca headland\u201d proved to be empty threats \u2014 the king would reign until his natural death in Bergen in 1202.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
