Boat licence – rules for recreational boats in Norway
To operate a recreational boat over 8 metres (26.25 ft) or with an engine exceeding 25 HP / 19 kW, a valid Norwegian boat licence (båtførerbevis) or an international boating certificate is required.
This requirement applies to anyone born on or after 1 January 1980. If you were born before this date, you may operate such boats without a licence – though taking the test is strongly recommended for safe navigation at sea.
- Theoretical exam – 50 multiple-choice questions
- Completed at an approved test centre
- Time limit: 1 hour
- Available in Norwegian or English
A preparatory course is not mandatory, but many find it helpful for understanding navigation rules, maritime regulations and safety.
For recreational boats over 15 metres, an extended certificate is required: Deck Officer Class 5 – leisure.
