On the Borgen trail, you don’t just walk through nature, but through thousands of years of Norwegian cultural history.
This 8-kilometer round trip can start either at the charming stave church in Hindrem or from Hindrum Fjordsenter, following the trail past characteristic Trøndelag farms, including the renowned Hindrum farm dairy that produces award-winning organic cheese. The trail leads you through lush forests and idyllic nature that gradually opens with spectacular panoramic views over Trondheimsfjorden. On the final stretch toward the fortress, you’ll encounter Jostein Finseråsen’s sculptures along Borgåsen Fairytale Trail – where modern troll art heralds the arrival of ancient mysteries. 2-3 hours round trip on foot gives you ample time to immerse yourself in both the nature experience and the historical traces surrounding you, while cyclists can enjoy large portions of the route on two wheels.
Here living farm life meets ancient mysteries – an experience that connects you with 7000 years of human presence.
At the ridge top awaits Borgen, an impressive ruin from the Migration Period between 350 and 550 AD, where stone piles remind of once mighty defensive walls. Below you’ll find cairns believed to be burial mounds or outposts that protected this strategic height. The archaeological treasure at Hindrum and Sæter tells of continuous settlement through millennia – the oldest cotter’s place here carries history stretching 7000 years back in time. Whether you choose to walk peacefully on foot or cycle large portions of the route, this trail invites you to explore how human traces and nature’s power have shaped this landscape through generations, from ancient warriors to today’s farming.
